Sedbergh, Yorkshire
The earliest evidence yet found of "Sedbergh Staveleys" are two or three families who lived at Sarthwaite and Dowbiggin, northeast of Sedbergh. There, William Staveley and Margaret had at least three children:
| Margrett Staveley | b. 1608 | Sedbergh, Yorkshire |
| Female (Isabel?) Staveley | b. July 1609 | Sedbergh, Yorkshire |
| Robert Staveley | b. March 4, 1612 | Sedbergh, Yorkshire |
William appears to have had a brother, James Staveley, who had a daughter Agnes. In 1632 and 1633 these parents and children were virtually wiped out except for William's son Robert, who appears to have survived and married Margaret FAWCETT in 1636, and had the following children.
| Margaret Staveley | b. December 13, 1637 | Sedbergh, Yorkshire | |
| William Staveley | b. September 20, 1640 | Sedbergh, Yorkshire | |
| Alice Staveley | b. October 10, 1641 | d. 1649 | Sedbergh, Yorkshire |
It appears that Robert was still alive when his daughter Alice was buried at Sedbergh in 1649. After 1649 no Staveley events are found registered at Sedbergh until the early 1800's. In 1808 Jennet "Stable" is baptized to parents Henry and Margaret, then in 1811, George, son of Henry Staveley and Margt. was baptized:
| Jennet Stable | b. January 3, 1808 | Sedbergh, Yorkshire |
| Henry Staveley | b. March 24, 1811 | Sedbergh, Yorkshire |
Even though the keeping of parish registers was prohibited between 1654 and 1670, with no Staveley events found registered at Sedbergh after 1649 until 1808/1811, it's tempting to think that there was a Kendal to Dent trail that bypassed Sedbergh, because between 1558 and 1630 there were many Staveley events registered at Kendal, and some beginning to appear at Dent.
William Staveley (b. 1836) is the son of Henry Staveley and Mabel LINDSAY of Dent. In 1878 William married Ellen OVERSBY November 12, 1873 in Sedbergh, but were residing at Hacrow in Dent in 1881. By 1891 they are residing with their children at Hebblethwaite Hall in Sedbergh as follows:
