Dent, Yorkshire

By 1620, a John Staveley was at Dent, where he married Alice LINZEY and, after her death, he married her sister Elizabeth LINZEY in Dent in 1623.  It is unknown who John's parents were.  If a Kendal to Dent theory holds true, he may be the son, baptized in 1595/6 at Kendal, of Henry Staveley and Elizabeth SHEPHERD.  (If that's so, it would link him to the Staveleys who emigrated to Delaware, North America, in the 1600s).

George Staveley married Margaret HANLEY October 3, 1743 in Dent, Yorkshire and are believed to have had the following children:

George and Margaret's son George (b. 1752) married Margaret METCALFE January 1, 1777 at Horton in Ribblesdale. Three months later Margaret died and George then married Ellen ROBINSON at Clapham, Yorkshire December 28, 1778.  A number of George and Ellen's children were baptized in Horton in Ribblesdale.

Son William (b. 1746) married Mary BOLLAND in 1772 in Ingleton Fells.  William Staveley and Mary BOLLAND had the following children baptized in Dent:

William Staveley and Mary Bolland's son, John Staveley (b. 1785), married Ann HOWSON on January 8, 1813 in Dent and had the following children:

Daughter Mary married William BRUNSKILL in Dent on June 28, 1838.

John and Ann are living at Rivling in 1841:

By 1851 John b. 1785 has died.  His brother George is found living with his sister-in-law in 1851:

John and Ann's sons Anthony (b. 1832) and John (b. 1835) both emigrated to Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada in 1857.

In 1861 Ann is presumed deceased, and her son William is now running the farm:

By 1871 William's brother George takes over the farm.

In 1872 George Staveley was married.  His wife, Jane Staveley, interestingly enough is the daughter of Henry Staveley and Ann HARPER.

George and Jane are only found in the 1881 census together.  By 1891 both have disappeared, and no registrations of their death have been found.  Their son John Henry Staveley aged 8 above is found residing with his Uncle John Staveley at Colt Park in Ingleton in 1891, the brother of John Henry's mother Jane. Jane's sister, Betsy BOWNESS (nee STAVELEY), is also living in the household, a widow, with her 2 children, William and John, who were both born in Lancaster, Lancashire. 

In 1901 George and Jane's son, John Henry Staveley, is found residing in Morecambe, Lancashire, along with his new wife and children.

William Staveley and Mary BOLLAND'S son Anthony married Hannah MOORE in Dent on September 12, 1827, and is found living in Dent in 1851:

Anthony and Hannah both died in Dent in 1856.

Another Dent Staveley lineage is that of Henry Staveley (b. 1797) who married Mabel LINDSAY in Dent June 6, 1818 and had the following children in Dent.

Henry and Mabel's grand daughter, Mabel HARPER, is staying with the family in 1851.  Mabel is the daughter of Judith Staveley who married Richard HARPER on October 11, 1845.

Henry's and Mable's son William (b. 1836) is a Tailor's Apprentice in the MORPHET household in Dent at the time of the census.

Henry and Mabel's son John (1827-1860) married Ann WHARTON of Ravenstonedale in the September quarter of 1850, and appears in the Dent section of the 1855 Directory:

John died in 1860, and his wife Ann is found widowed in the 1861 census:

Son Thomas William Staveley (b. 1832) married Jane MIDDLETON before 1851, and is found residing in Darcy Lever Lancashire in 1861.

Henry and Mabel are found residing at Hacraw in 1861 with their two youngest sons:

Henry and Mabel's son David (b. 1830) married Alice SEDGWICK in 1853, and is residing near his parents in 1861 at Lunds, Dent:

Henry and Mabel's son, Henry Staveley (b. 1825), married Ann HARPER November 15, 1845 in Dent, this family is also found residing nearby in 1851 as follows:

Henry and Ann's daughter, Mabel, was missing from the household in 1861.  A search of the GRO death indexes revealed that Mabel died in the September quarter of 1857. Recently another birth and death certificate were uncovered that show that Henry and Ann, a year after daughter Mabel's death, gave birth to another daughter on August 4, 1858.  Sadly, she too died, just a day after she was born, on August 5.  The cause of her death was listed simply as fits - no medical attendant.

By 1871 Mabel is widowed.  Her husband Henry died in 1867 at the age of 71 years.

Note that no relationship is given for Elizabeth Swainbank in the 1861 census.  Mabel's son Jonathan has a notation in the last column of the enumerator's sheet (disability column), and it is presumed this notation means '12 years lunatic'.  Jonathan died in 1872 at the age of 34 years.  Mabel died in 1877 at the age of 79 years. 

Mabel's son William is staying with his brother John's widow Ann in 1871, perhaps to help out Ann and his nephew Henry with the farm duties:

In 1871, Henry and Ann's eldest surviving daughter, Jane b. 1847, is missing from the household.  Jane, now aged 23, is found residing as a house maid at Westmorland House near Kendal, Westmorland, in the employ of Thomas Head.  Thomas is a partner in the Drapery firm of Parker and Head according to the 1871 census.

Jane marries the following year, and with this marriage we appear to merge two of the Dent Staveley families.   Jane, daughter of Henry Staveley and Ann HARPER, marries George, son of John Stavely and Ann HOWSON in Dent in 1872.  In 1881 they are residing at Rivling, George's childhood home (see above for the 1881 census transcript for George and Jane's household).

Henry's brother, David Staveley, moves from Lunds and  is found residing in Hawes in 1881 with sons Edmond and John.

Henry is still residing at Raw Ridding in 1881:

Henry Staveley and Ann HARPER's son Henry (b. 1848) is found residing in Burrow with Burrow (near Kirkby Lonsdale), Lancashire with the remainder of his siblings in 1881.

Daughter Jane married George Stavely, son of John Staveley and Ann HOWSON, in 1872.

Henry and Mabel's son William (b. 1836) married Ellen OVERSBY November 12, 1873 in Sedbergh.  William's mother Mabel had died in 1877, and William and his wife Ellen have assumed possession of Hacraw by 1881:

William moves his entire family to Hebblethwaite Hall, Sedbergh by the 1891 census, and his nephew John takes up residence at Hacrow by the next census (see below).  William's sister-in-law Ann, widow of his brother John, is still residing in Dent with her son Henry in 1881

Ann's son Henry married Sarah Mary GREENBANK in 1882 in Settle, and is living at High Hall, Dent in 1891:

Henry and Ann's son John is living in Ingleton, with his sister Betsy, and his nephew John Henry Staveley.

David and Alice's son John married Mary Ann GOAD in 1885 and is residing nearby at the house previously inhabited by his Uncle William in 1881 (b. 1836):

Note: John's son David (b. 1885) appears to have joined the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on May 13, 1915.  David gives his date of birth as March 29, 1885, and "Dent" as his place of birth.  He declares himself to be a Farmer by trade.  On the reverse of his attestation paper is a note stating that he has a scar on this left arm, and an "operation scar right kidney".

Henry's wife Ann (nee HARPER) is deceased by 1901, and we find that Henry's son Richard is now head of the farm.

*Betsy and William were enumerated as Bownan in 1901.  However, the record of Betsy's marriage from 1887 shows that she married a John BOWNESS, and her son William was registered as William Henry BOWNESS. As such the census transcript for 1901 is in error.  Betsy's husband John died in Lancaster a mere two years after they were married, at age 26, in 1889.  The cause of John's death is unknown. In 1891 Betsy and her children were staying with Betsy's brother John in Ingleton. Betsy's youngest son John (b. 1889) is missing from the household in 1901, but was found staying with his aunt and uncle, William and Nancy Bowness at Keer Holme, Dalton, Westmorland, near Kendal, in 1901.

Henry Staveley and Sarah (nee GREENBANK) have two additional children by 1901:

Henry Staveley was born July 4, 1785 in Horton in Ribblesdale, the son of George Staveley and Ellen ROBINSON.  Henry is believed to have had a total of three marriages.  The first marriage was to Mary HARRISON in 1806.  He then married Nanny MIDDLETON in Dent on October 2, 1819.  Henry and Nanny had the following two children baptized in Dent:

Edward married Isabella and firstly moved to Horton in Ribblesdale.  Edward and Isabella are later found residing in South Shields, Durham during the 1861 census.

On November 11, 1830 Henry married his third wife Betty GOTH, and they are found residing in Ingleton in 1841.  Henry and Betty had a son George b. 1832 in Dent:

George (b. 1832) first married Ellen WAINMAN in Ulverston on April 24, 1853. A daughter Elizabeth was born later that year, but died in infancy.  George's wife Ellen died the following year in 1854.  George remarried in Kendal in 1856 to a Barbara REDMAYNE, and briefly resided in South Shields, Durham prior to the 1861 census, but the family eventually settled in Ambleside, Westmorland.

There's nothing yet to indicate a re-joining, at Hawes about 1846, of related lines from the Dent-Sedbergh area. But there was at Hawes at that time also a George Staveley and Mary KNOWLES family. They had moved there about 1838 from Askrigg. George Staveley was born in 1808 at Grisedale, a few miles east of Sedbergh; he was a miner who eventually moved on to Darlington and then Coundon, both in Durham. George and Mary later removed to the Burnley district of Lancashire. Several of their children remained in Durham.
