Alice M. Staveley |
Thomas Staveley was born in Chester, Cheshire around 1848 to parents John W. Staveley of Derbyshire and Jemima PARRY. John was born about 1824 in Dore, Derbyshire to Samuel and Mary Staveley. In 1861 Samuel and Mary are found residing in Norton, Derbyshire. John married Jemima in Chester in 1848. Despite the Chester entries, this Staveley family did not remain in Chester for long and does not appear to be connected to any earlier Cheshire Staveley lines. Shortly after their marriage John and Jemima moved to Wednesfield in Staffordshire, and later on to Sheffield where they are found in 1861, and eventually on to Birkenhead where John died in 1868. Needless to say, this family didn't appear to stay in one place for very long, and it's perhaps typical of the numerous family migrations occurring throughout Britain during the mid 1800's! |
Martha Banks |
John and Jemima's son Thomas Staveley married Martha BANKS (pictured left) in the Rotherham district, near Sheffield, in 1869, the daughter of Harrison Banks of Cumberland. In 1871 Thomas and Martha are residing with Martha's parents here in Beighton, Derbyshire, and their first daughter Alice is just one year old. We will follow Thomas and his family through to the 1901 census. It is Thomas and Martha's daughter Alice M. Staveley (pictured top left) who after her marriage to Thomas MOORE is found traveling to Ellis Island in 1924, where she then makes a new home for her family in America. |

Thomas' mother and brothers are found in Birkenhead in 1871. Also, in 1871 James Henry (above) is residing with his grandmother Jemima in Birkenhead. It does not appear that there is a male Staveley child old enough in the household to be James Henry's father at the time. James Henry is not found residing with his parents either in 1871 or 1881, and has not been located in 1891-1901 census records, so his exact parentage is unknown. Unfortunately, Jemima is widowed in 1871. Her husband John died in 1868 in Birkenhead aged 44.

John Francis & Thomas Staveley |
The photograph to the left shows two of Thomas and Martha's sons, John Francis and Thomas Staveley, as young boys, and was likely taken not too long after this 1891 census was recorded. Alice, Annie and Sarah are all absent from the household in 1891. Alice appears to be a domestic servant in the employ of Simeon and Isabella Hart in 1891 in Leicester. Another servant in the household is Eliza Moore. Alice Staveley married a Thomas MOORE in 1896 in Wortley, near Sheffield. Perhaps Thomas was a relative of Eliza? |
Alice's sisters Annie E. and Sarah are both employed together in 1891 as servants in the same household in Clapham Park, Bedfordshire, in the employ of Hugh E. Browning, a retired Army officer.
The picture above was likely taken around the mid 1880's and shows Thomas and Martha's daughters, Annie E. Staveley and her sister Maud, as young children sitting in an open field, overlooking Beighton toward St. Mary's Church (click to enlarge image).

Thomas died shortly after the 1901 census was taken. The family must have moved in 1901 as his death was registered in Chesterfield, Derbyshire aged 52 years. Thomas' wife Martha died in 1918 in Chesterfield, aged 68 years.
The remainder of the family seems to have remained mostly in the Chesterfield area. There is an entry of marriage for Henrietta in the March quarter of 1902 in Chesterfield. Her sister Beatrice appears to have married a Thomas MORLEY in Chesterfield in the December quarter of 1910. John Francis Staveley was married in Chesterfield in 1911. Edith appears to have married Harry B. LUND in the December quarter of 1912, also in Chesterfield. As mentioned above Alice married Thomas MOORE in 1896, and by 1901 the family is found residing in Sheffield:

The story doesn't end here. An additional reference to Alice and Thomas Moore was found on the Ship's manifest of the S.S. Orduna sailing from Southampton. Alice is found traveling with her daughter Elsie, and arrived at Ellis Island, New York for the first time on December 2, 1924:

Further digging revealed that Alice's older daughter Eva traveled to America in advance of her mother and sister. She is found aboard the S.S. Celtic, sailing from Liverpool and arriving at Ellis Island March 25, 1921. Eva is unmarried, and 18 years old on arrival.

Prior to the arrival of Thomas Staveley in Beighton in 1871, the family of Francis Staveley of Dore, Derbyshire (Thomas' uncle) and his wife Ann BOOTH (nee HOBSON) are found in Beighton in 1861. Francis is the son of Samuel and Mary Staveley who were themselves residing in Norton, Derbyshire in 1861. Francis was previously married to Amelia Ann SHAW, and had a son Joseph Francis Staveley in Sheffield in 1847. In 1851 he is reported to be a widower at the age of 29 years, living with the SHAW family (see Norton page for more details). His son Joseph Francis is a lodger in the LAITHWAITE household in 1851, in Horwich, Lancashire. Joseph is later found in 1871 living in Ancoats, Lancashire.
Francis Staveley's second marriage was to a widow, Ann BOOTH (nee HOBSON), in 1852, but no children were produced from this marriage. A daughter Jane is recorded in the 1861 census, but she was in fact born Jane BOOTH, a child from Ann's prior marriage.
