Chesterfield, Derbyshire

Early Staveley entries in the Chesterfield parish registers include the following children christened to an Abraham Staveley at St. Mary and All Saints:

Sarah Staveley b. April 25, 1750 St. Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, Derbyshire
Grace Staveley b. October 15, 1752 St. Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, Derbyshire
Ann Staveley b. September 27, 1757 St. Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, Derbyshire

The origins of this family are unknown, and a record of birth or marriage has not been located for Abraham.

This seems to be the family of Samuel Staveley and Sarah RATCLIFFE who were married in Duffield, Derbyshire on November 16, 1829.  Samuel died in Chesterfield in 1840, and in 1841 we find his widow and children as follows:

1841: West Cars, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England

STAVELEY Sarah F 45 (no occupation stated) Derbyshire
STAVELEY William M 15   Derbyshire
STAVELEY Ann F 12   Derbyshire

The 1851 census shows that Sarah was born in Belper, Derbyshire.  She reports her son William to have been born in Nottingham:

1851: Poor Folks Fold, St. Mary's Gate, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England

Sarah STAVELEY  Head   W  Female   55  Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England    Parish Relief
William STAVELEY   Son    U  Male  23   Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England    Labourer

Sarah's daughter Ann is visiting the TAFT household in Chesterfield in 1861.

Son William Staveley confirms his father to be Samuel Staveley on his marriage record, and married Ann MARSLAND August 29, 1853 at Saint Peter, Old Brampton, Derbyshire, and had the following children christened at St. Mary and All Saints in Chesterfield:

Emma Staveley b. January 15, 1854 St. Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, Derbyshire

William died in Chesterfield in 1878 at the reported age of 57 years.

Ann's daughter Emma married Henry BROTHERTON in 1879 in Chesterfield.  Daughter Sarah Ann married John STRAW in 1881 and is staying with her sister Emma in 1891.

Ann died later the same year, in 1891, at the age of 60 years.  Ann's daughter Harriet is residing down the street in the WILLBOWEN household, and now has a son William:

1891: 1 Cowley's Yard, Holywell St., Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England

John WILLBOWEN  Head  W  Male 47  Syston, Leicestershire, England  Furnace Man
Allen WILLBOWEN  Son  U  Male 19  Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England   Colliery Labourer
Harriet STAVELEY Housekeeper  U Female 28  Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England
William STAVELEY Housekeeper Son  U  Male 7  Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England  Scholar

It appears that Harriet never married, and died in Chesterfield in 1933 at the age of 71.  Harriet's son William died in 1947 at the age of 64.

As for Ann (MARSLAND's) son William (b. 1864), in 1885 he joined the army, and according to his military pension records he served continuously from 1885 to 1902 with tours of duty both at home and abroad.  William was sent to India in 1888 and his record shows that he suffered influenza during a minor epidemic in March of 1890, and some six months later, in September, he contracted malaria and spent 16 days in the hospital.

On July 25, 1892 William Staveley married Annie COULTHARD in the parish church in Chesterfield. It is unclear if any children were produced from this marriage.  In 1901 Annie is found residing alone, as William was deployed overseas.

1901: 11 Spread Eagle Rd, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England

Annie STAVELEY  Head  M  Female 26  Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England  (No Occupation Declared)

After his marriage to Annie, William served a tour of duty in South Africa, during the Boer War, from February 13, 1900 to May 24, 1902, and was the recipient of the Queen's South Africa Medal.  At this time William lists his next of kin as "wife" residing at 14 Park Road, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. At the end of the war it appears that William then took a break from active military service. Sadly, in 1910, William's wife Annie died in Chesterfield at the young age of 35 years.

A widower at the start of World War 1, William again re-enlisted for active military service on December 7, 1914.  He was assigned to the National Reserve 8th Batallion Sherwood Foresters.  However, Wililam only served 1 year, 207 days, and was discharged on June 30, 1916 "in consequence of being no longer physically fit for service".  Further investigation uncovered a medical report that reads as follows:

Staveley, age 47

May 15, 1916  Unit: 159 Protection Co Royal Defence Corps

Disease: Myalgia

About 10 years ago, the man reports he was working at Grassmoor Colliery in a wet place.  I first saw him in November 1915 and treated him for Rheumatic pains, getting no better I sent him to 1st Northern General Hospital Newcastle, from there he was sent to Harrowgate, and so continues.  The debility is increasing very much and the heart beginning to fail.

J. Somers Forrest, M.D. in charge

William Staveley was awarded the War Badge on April 16, 1917, at which time his home address was still at 12 Park Road, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
