Hammersmith, Middlesex

The following family is that of Robert Ussher Staveley of Dublin, Ireland, and his wife Alice Elizabeth CARMODY.  Robert and Alice had settled in Hackney, Middlesex.  While in the Navy, Robert died unexpectedly in 1884 of tuberculosis, and Alice quickly remarried, to a George Loverock ORME at the end of 1884.  In 1891 we find the family as follows:

1891: 1 Thornfield Road, Hammersmith, Middlesex, England

George L. ORME  Head  M  Male  30  Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England  Pianoforte Salesman
Alice ORME  Wife   M   Female   34  Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

In 1901 we find the Staveley/Orme family living in Fulham, Middlesex.

This is where we seem to lose Arthur Patrick Staveley for a while though. Arthur married Ada Matilda T. HODGES in Brentford, Middlesex, on July 29, 1897.  Thus far attempts to locate Arthur and Ada in the 1901 census have failed.  It seems that sometime between 1897 and WW1 Arthur appears to have moved his family back to Ireland.  As of 1914, Arthur states he has one child, James Butler Ormond Staveley, born on June 30, 1903.  His Army War Record shows that he enlisted in Limerick, Ireland on December 28th, 1914.  He gives his postal address as: 143 Eden Terrace, Merrion Rd, Dublin.  Arthur served in the Army for a period of 4 years 151 days.  Under 'Descriptive and Other Distinguishing Marks' his record states the following:

Has a slight impediment in his speech and a small scar from a fall on inside of left leg about 3 inches from the ankle

Arthur Patrick Staveley's service was not uneventful, and the following are few highlights from his Army service record:

July 16, 1916  Promoted A/Cpl
Sept 3, 1916  Reverted to L/Cpl for drinking in the canteen during prohibited hours about 8am
Oct 7, 1916 Reverted to Pte (inefficiency)
Dec 27, 1916 Hospitalized (neuritis)
Dec 9, 1917 Hospitalized (malaria)
Feb 19, 1918 Transferred to the R.A.M.C.

This last entry is significant, because at the time Arthur was discharged from service, the following notation is found his record:

Arthur Staveley
Age last birthday: 43 years
Debility following influenza
Date of origin of debility: January 28, 1919
Place of origin of debility: Kantala Egypt

Hospitalized for influenza from April 26, 1919 to May 1, 1919

Transferred 19th of June, then to England

On the Army pension record, there is a notation "Pension Expires: REJECTED".

Arthur Patrick Staveley died in 1924.

Arthur's son, James Butler Ormond Staveley, married a Kathleen BUTLER, and enlisted in the Merchant Navy.

James and Kathleen had the following children:

Robert Arthur Staveley b.  Ireland
Maud Staveley b.  Ireland

Sadly James was killed in action during WW2, on August 5, 1940 at the age of 37 years.  At the time of his death, his parents Arthur and Ada, and his wife Kathleen, are listed as being of Blackrock, County Dublin, Ireland. James was interred at the Dundee Eastern Necropolis, Scotland.

The origins of the following Fulham Staveleys are not clear, however it is known that Samuel Staveley b. 1861 in Newington, Middlesex, is the son of Samuel Staveley, a Farrier, of Somerstown, St. Pancras, London. Samuel Staveley of Newington married Edith JONES in Fulham in 1887:

1891: 29 Arrell Road, Fulham, London, Middlesex, England

Samuel STAVELEY   Head   M   Male   30   Lambeth, London, England   Carpenter
Edith  STAVELEY   Wife   M   Female   26  Battersea, London, England

Samuel STAVELEY   Son   U   Male   2   Hammersmith, London, England
Arthur STAVELEY  Son  U  Male  2 mo  Fulham, London, England

Samuel's wife Edith died later that same year at the age of 26 years.  Samuel married his second wife, Rosalina HILL, in Fulham in 1893:

1901: 61 Ancile Street, Fulham, London, Middlesex, England

Samuel STAVELEY   Head   M   Male   40   Newington, London, England   Joiner
Roslina  STAVELEY   Wife   M   Female   29  Guildford, Surrey, England

May R. STAVELEY  Daur  U  Female  2  Fulham, London, England
Frank E. STAVELEY  Son  U  Male  7 Mo  Fulham, London, England

Samuel and Roslina's son John Alfred Staveley was a Rifleman in the 12th Battalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps during World War 1.  He died January 31, 1918 at the age of 22 years, and his buried in Fulham Old Cemetery.
