George Staveley is the son of George Staveley and Mary KNOWLES of Askrigg, North Yorkshire, derived from of the Sedbergh/Dent line of Staveleys. George was born abt. 1838 in Askrigg, Yorkshire. He first married Alice HOPWOOD in Burnley, Lancashire in 1861. George and Alice had two children in Burnley, but by 1871 George is noticably absent from the household. Presumably George and Alice must have aquired a divorce, because in 1874 George married Louisa WHITE:
