Hull, Yorkshire

Francis Clayton Staveley was born in 1798 in York, the son of William Staveley and Martha CLAYTON of Pocklington.  Francis Clayton Staveley was a bit of a scoundrel who is described in one account as 'a careless, expensive man'. He corresponded briefly with Robert Staveley III of the Irish Line when Robert was 'unearthing' Staveleys in Liverpool during visits in 1842/3 and Francis Clayton Staveley was living at Eldon Terrace, Tranmere.  Francis' son Alfred Eldon Staveley is later found residing in West Derby in 1871.

In his youth, Francis' father William was the prison Governor in York, and asked Francis to chose between a profession in the Church or at the Bar. He chose the latter and went to Oxford University, where he resided for seven years. He first entered University College and met a girl from nearby Witney who reputedly had a fortune of £30,000. His father though was entirely against the match and made him call it off. He was sued for breach of promise and had to pay £300 damages plus £400 costs. He then met another girl called Mary HAMMOND and got married. As a result of this marriage, he had to leave University College and go to St. Alban's Hall. Francis and Mary (Hammond) look to have had two daughters, Frances christened at Woodstock, Oxon, in 1822 and Charlotte Maria christened in Belgrave, Leicester in 1823.  Daughter Frances married William WHITTON on February 5, 1848 in Hull.  Note that by 1861 Frances is widowed and appears to be residing with her mother in Jersey, in the Channel Islands by 1861.

Francis fell into idle company and never got his law degree. He also refused to become a vicar and thus never gained a profession. Francis married Mary FEATHERSTONE November 16, 1829 at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull so whether he divorced his first wife, was never married to her or she just died is somewhat unclear.

Children of Francis and Mary Featherstone appear to be as follows:

Alfred Eldon Staveley b. 1829 Godmanchester, Huntingdon (1851 Census Entry)
William Clayton Staveley b. 1831 Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull
Harriet Staveley b. 1833 Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull Died in Infancy
Ann Staveley b. 1836 Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull
Francis Philip Staveley b. 1836 Sculcoates
Harriet Staveley b. 1841 Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull
Mary Staveley b. 1846 Kingston Upon Hull

Francis' father William was rather disappointed in him, and he made Francis join in breaking the entail in his property promising to leave him £8,000 in his will - which he never did!  The property was subsequently sold for £16,000.

Son Alfred Eldon Staveley is married and living in Sculcoates in 1851:

Another Staveley family is residing in Hull in 1861.  James Staveley (b. March 22, 1807) is the son of Thomas Staveley and Frances MONKMAN of North Burton, Yorkshire.  James married Rebecca TODD September 11, 1831 at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull and had the following children christened at Holy Trinity:

Elizabeth Staveley b. August 29, 1834   Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull

James and Rebecca's son John appears to be aboard the ship "Veligram" in Portsmouth Harbour on census night 1861:

James' wife Rebecca died in 1870 in Hull at the age of 63 years.  In 1871 we find James still residing at the same address:

James' daughter Ellen married John HOLT in 1870 at Holy Trinity.

James and Rebecca's son Samuel married Sarah Ann HOWLETT in 1870, presumably the sister of Emma HOWLETT who married John Albert Staveley above:

Samuel J. STAVELEY  Head  M  Male   23   Hull, Yorkshire, England  Painter

James' son John Albert Staveley appears to have married about 1864, but is already a widower by 1871:

Later that same year John married Emma HOWLETT in 1871.  John and Emma are residing in Newington, in the parish of Kirk Ella, just 5 miles WNW of Hull in 1881.

In 1881 James is now a resident of the Hull Union Workhouse:

James STAVELEY  Pauper Inmate   W   Male   74   North Burton, Yorkshire, England   Fish Merchant (N Oc)

James died in 1884 at the age of 76 years.

Samuel's first wife Sarah died in the March quarter of 1877 at the age of 32 years.  Later that same year, Samuel married Ann Elizabeth BAXENDALE:

Martha STAVELEY   Daur      Female   2   Hull, Yorkshire, England
Helena STAVELEY   Daur      Female   1   Hull, Yorkshire, England

Presumably Son Charles, and daughter Ada, were the children from Samuel's first marriage to Sarah.  In 1881, Samuel and Ann emigrated to Adelaide, Australia aboard the Cotopaxi.  Four additional children were born to Samuel and Ann in Adelaide, James Alfred (b. 1881), twins Daisy and Edward Walter ( 1883) , and a son William (b. 1887).

William and Maria's daughter Florence Anne Staveley is visiting Annie HAIGH in 1891.  Annie is the widow of Charles Haigh, and this is the same family that William's brother John Albert was boarding with in the 1861 census:
