Sophia was American by birth, from Albany, New York. Sophia is visiting a household in Folkestone, Kent during the 1861 census, while John is found residing in Kings Norton with his son:

By 1871 his son (Arkyl) John Arthur Staveley is found staying with his sister Rosamond and her family in Halifax. In 1881 he is living in Lambeth, Surrey with his wife and children
