His mother is Mary WILLIAMS, and the 1860 census suggests that Richard was born a Williams out of wedlock, and later assumed the surname Stavely after his mother married John Washington Stavely of Washington County. Richard and his wife Mary were married about 1875, and at the time of the 1900 census we find them living in Decatur.
