Ayr, Scotland
There appear to be at least two distinct Staveley family occupations in Ayrshire, one from Ireland, and one from England. Beginning with the Staveleys from Ireland, in 1841 we find the following family:
1841: Cross Street, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland
| James STEVELAY | Head | M | Male | 25 | Ireland | Coal M. |
| Marcy STEVELAY | Wife | M | Female | 30 | Ireland | |
| Hugh STEVELAY | Son | U | Male | 3 | ||
| James STEVELAY | Son | U | Male | 5 Mo |
In the same census, living on the same street in the HANNAH/DINON household is a Sally STEVELY aged 2 years. James's parentage is unclear, but at present it is thought that he is likely the son of Hugh Stevely of Antrim, Ireland. James is believed to have possibly married a Mary LAW prior to his arrival in Scotland. James and his family are missing from the 1851 Scottish census, but in 1861 we find them in Stevenston.
John Staveley's ancestry is unknown at this time. John Staveley married Mary CALDWELL in Ayr on August 16, 1875.
