Lowell, MA

The Staveleys of Lowell, Massachusetts came to America sometime after 1881.  This Staveley line originates in Stockton on the Forest, in Yorkshire.   Benjamin Staveley was born in 1844 in York St. Margaret, to parents Thomas Staveley and Maria SCOTT.  Benjamin is residing with his parents in 1861 in St. Mary Bishophill, York.  Benjamin married Harriet ARMITAGE in 1864 and initially settled his family in Fixby, Yorkshire.  The last we see this family in England is during the 1881 census in Fixby.

Some passenger records for this family have been found.  Daughter Christiana is found sailing to Boston, Massachusetts August 25, 1895 on board the Scythia.

Her brother, Benjamin Armitage Staveley, married Elizabeth THORNTON in Huddersfield, Yorkshire.  On March 24, 1891 both arrived in Boston aboard the Cephalonia (lower steerage) during a visit to the United States.  At this time both are declared to be citizens of England.  Benjamin declared his occupation as Blacksmith, and both were listed to be 21 years of age.  Later on September 3, 1914 Benjamin, a Wheelwright by trade, and his wife Elizabeth arrive in Boston on board the Arabic (see Immigration Records), and settled in Lowell, Massachusetts.
