In the 1881 census for Scotland, a Thomas Stevely shows up in Glasgow for the first time, apparently from Ireland. Thomas married Matilda MONTGOMERY in 1877. It is thought that Thomas' parents may be a Thomas Stevely and Mary Jane SPENCE of Ayrshire.

It is interesting to note that the last 2 children born to Thomas and Matilda are reported to have been born back in Ireland, although to date it is unclear which Irish group of Stevelys/Staveleys they descend from.
*Thomas reports his birthplace as Ayr, which is interesting, because there are Stevelys in Ayr, also from Ireland, as early as 1841, although Thomas does not appear to be directly descended from them.
