Stewart County, TN
Eli J. Staveley was apparently born in either North or South Carolina in 1790. There is some discrepency in the Federal census records, as he is reported to have been born in South Carolina in the census of 1850, but in North Carolina in the 1860 census. Elijah married Mary Elizabeth COLLIER around 1818.
An Eli J. STALEY appears in the 1820 Stewart County census, with two boys and two girls under ten years of age in the household. However, as names of non-heads of household are not recorded, it is difficult to verify if this could be the same person.
In 1829, an Eli J. Stavely is listed on the Stewart County Tax List in reference to the area of Elk Creek. The following year, in 1830, an Eli STANLY of Stewart County reports five boys under aged twenty and four girls under twenty as residing in his household.
That same year:
Deed of Conveyance - Stewart County November 1, 1830 James Collier, Eli J. Stavely, William Ratliff, John
Collier, William Collier, Arthur Collier and David Collier to Benjamin
Collier for 100 acres. |
Then in 1837 Eli J. Stavely is listed again in the Stewart County Tax List in regards to 120 acres worth $500. A William M. Stavely is listed on the same Tax List with 40 acres worth $150. It is unclear at this time who William might be.
Eli J. STABELEY is recorded in the 1840 Stewart County census, and reports five sons under the age of 20, and four daughters under the age of 15.
The 1850 federal census finally lists all members of the household, and shows the famiy as follows:

The earlier census records suggest that additional children were born to Elijah and Elizabeth. There is a marriage record for Eli J. Stavely to Elizabeth LARGENT on April 10, 1839 in Stewart County. This Eli J. Stavely, Jr. appears to be deceased by December 1844. His father, Eli J. Stavely was appointed guardian of Eli Jr's son William E. J. Stavely "minor orphan of Eli J. Stavely, Jr." This appointment was made by the Stewart County Court on February 3, 1845.
