Skirlaugh is situated in the East Riding Yorkshire, approximately 9 miles northeast of Hull, and contained within the parish of Swine.  The exact origins of the Skirlaugh Staveleys is not absolutely clear.

James Staveley was the son of John and Hannah Staveley of Skirlaugh, b. December 18, 1817.  He married Martha KELL in 1846 and settled in Winterton, Lincolnshire.

George Staveley was the son of John Staveley and Nancy MAIR b. January 16, 1831 in Skirlaugh, Yorkshire.  George married Elizabeth ALLISON September 1, 1856 in Kingston Upon Hull.  In 1861 he is residing in New Sleaford, Lincolnshire, and by 1871 the family has settled in Halifax, Yorkshire.

Robert Staveley married Charlotte Mair on May 14, 1842 in Swine, near Skirlaugh, Yorkshire.  By 1861 Robert and his family are found residing in Aldborough Yorkshire, near Hull.  This is one of a few Staveley lines that ultimately emigrated to America, and settled in Clinton County, Iowa.
