Preston, Lancashire
There appear to have been three Staveley lineages in Preston over the years. The first family is believed to have originated from the Ingleton line (derived from the Sedbergh/Dent group of Staveleys), but as yet this connection has not been resolved.
1841: High Street, Preston, Lancashire
| STAVELY | Elizabeth | 25 | Ind | Born Outside Census County |
| STAVELY | James | 14 | Born Outside Census County |
James Staveley has given his place of birth in the census records as Black Burton, or Burton Yorkshire, which is approximately 0.8 miles from Ingleton. James married Ellen MC KIE on September 13, 1849 at St. John's Church in Preston. In 1861 James' mother Elizabeth is residing with him in Preston:

| James STAVELEY | Son | U | Male | 1 | Preston, Lancashire, England | |

James and Ellen are missing from the 1861 census, however we find them again in 1871 as follows:
1871: 172 Havelock St., Preston, Lancashire
| James STAVELEY | Head | M | Male | 44 | Burton, York, England | Joiner |

Recently in Blackburn, Lancashire a piano "Made by James Staveley, Preston Est. 1869" came up for auction. James the younger is listed as a commercial clerk in 1871, but by 1881 is a "music seller". It is unclear at this time if it was James or his father that was the piano maker, but is presumed it was the younger James.

James and Ellen's son James married Margaret Jump in Preston in 1874 and is found in 1891 as follows:

James and Margaret's first son, Charles Frederick Staveley, was born in 1875, but died aged 5 years in 1880, just a few months before the census.

| Emily STAVELEY | Niece | U | Female | 9 | Preston, Lancashire, England | Scholar |
Mary Ann married James Moffat in Preston in 1888. Emily here is listed as James and Ellen's niece, but in 1901 is actually revealed to be their grand-daughter, as she is the daughter of James and Ellen's son James (b. 1849). Emily's mother Margaret (nee Jump) had died, and her father James is found a widower living with Emily's two brothers:
1891: 14 & 15 ? St., Preston, Lancashire

| Mary LIGHT | Serv | U | Female | 24 | Oakengate, Lancashire, England | Gen. Dom. Serv. |
**William H. appears to have mis-recorded in the enumerator's record. Although the name is clearly written as 'William', it is believed this is actually Walter (listed in the 1881 census above).

| James STAVELEY | Head | W | Male | 74 | Bentham, Lancashire, England | Living on own means |

Ellen died in 1894 aged 70. James died in 1902 aged 75. His son James (b. 1849) is found still living in Preston in 1901:
1901: 15 Lune St., Preston, Lancashire

It is interesting to note that recently a piano came up for auction that was made by James Staveley of Preston (image at right). The maker's mark on the piano clearly read "Established 1869, James Staveley, 15 Lune Street, Preston". This is obviously James Staveley, the instrument dealer, listed in the 1901 census above. It is not absolutely clear if James crafted the piano himself, or if he was purely a dealer in instruments. However, no additional manufacturing marks appeared on the piano's cabinet.
In December 1906, Walter Haydn Staveley married Emily Poole in Blackpool, at Holy Trinity, South Shore, Lancashire.
John Staveley b. December 20, 1801 is the son of John Staveley and Elizabeth WOOD of Disley, Cheshire. He married Margaret WOODWARD in Manchester on October 16, 1825. They are known to have had one daughter Elizabeth Margaret Staveley b. February 18, 1827 in Manchester.

In 1861, John is living with his wife Margaret in Barton Upon Irwell.
There is a third, unrelated Staveley family, found in Preston in the 1920's. There is a branch of the Staveley family that originated in Aysgarth, but had first lived in Pendlebury, and then in Burnley, Lancashire for some time prior to relocating to Preston. Frederick T. Staveley was the son of John Staveley and Elizabeth SEDDON, and after his wife Minnie died he moved to Preston until his death in 1926. His son Alfred Edlestone Staveley was married in Preston and died there in 1949.
