Paddington, Middlesex

The family listed below is that of Lieutenant-general William Staveley (1784-1854) of York and his wife Sarah MATHER.  William married Sarah MATHER on January 23, 1817, the daughter of Thomas Mather, and they are known to have had the following children:

Charles William Dunbar Staveley   b. December 18, 1817  Boulogne-sur-Mer, France
 Henrietta Staveley   b. May 4, 1819  Hythe

By 1861 Sarah is widowed, and residing with two of her children in Paddington, Middlesex:

It appears that Sarah died soon after the census was taken in 1871 at the age of 73 years.  In 1871 Sarah's daughter Charlotte is residing in Hastings, Sussex with her Aunt (Sarah Mather's sister).  It appears that daughter Harriet has some of her children residing with her brother in 1871, Charles William Dunbar Staveley, in Stoke Damerel, Devon.

Thomas George Staveley was born in Middlesex, the son of Thomas Staveley and Eliza WOWSKI of Kensington.  He married Fanny (nee?), who had died in 1865:

For some reason, Thomas' son, George E. Staveley, was missing from the household in 1871, but was later located in Kent 1881:

George Edmund Staveley served in the 1st Bombay Lancers, and married Fanny HENDLEY.  They and had a son George Hendley Staveley born in Poona, India in 1883.  George Hendley Staveley married Lizette McCARTHY.  He served in World War 1 and was a Captain in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.  Unfortunately, George Hendley Staveley was killed on April 14, 1917 (see Medal Cards), and is buried in the Serre Road Cemetery, Somme, France.  His widow Lizette was residing in Lissenhall, Swords, Dublin, Ireland at the time of her husband's death, with their son George.

Thomas George Staveley died in Honiton, Devon in 1887 at the age of 62 years.  His wife Janet is found residing in Bexhill, East Sussex in 1891.  Thomas' daughter Edith Charlotte Staveley married an Engineering Assistant, Ashton Marler HEATH, in Uxbridge in 1891.  They are both found residing as boarders in Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester during the 1891 census, and in Richmond Surrey during the 1901 census.  It does not appear that they had any children by this marriage.

Thomas George's son William Henry Charles Staveley became a registered surgeon and in 1891 is listed as a boarder residing in the RACK household in St. George Hanover Square.  The following year he married Annie Maud NICHOL, and by 1891 they are found residing with their children:

Around 1900 William Henry Charles Staveley's edited the thirteenth edition of Gardner's Household Medicine and Sickroom Guide to much acclaim:

William Henry Charles Staveley

The Manchester Guardian - 'considerably revised by Mr. W. H. C. Staveley, F.R.C.S., and brought more into line with the practice of modern medicine.'

The Speaker - 'A book of reference which has passed into its thirteenth edition scarecely requires a narrow scrutiny of its claims.  This is the position of "Gardener's Household Medicine," which has been revised and brought up to date by Dr. Staveley.'
