Higher Booths, Lancashire

Enos Staveley was born in Aysgarth, Yorkshire in 1825, the son of George Staveley and Dorothy Wray.  This Staveley family left Aysgarth sometime between 1833-1841.  The last parish entry for this family in Aysgarth was recorded in 1833, and we find Enos living with his parents in Horwich, Lancashire during the 1841 census.   By 1851 Enos is found living in Ardwick with his then widowed mother.  In the June quarter of 1853 Enos married Elizabeth DAVENPORT in Manchester.  Elizabeth was the daughter of John Davenport and Alice TURNER of Chorley, Lancashire.  Although Enos had been living in Ardwick before his marriage, it is likely that Enos and Elizabeth met in Horwich.  Elizabeth's family had moved to Horwich by the late 1830's and resided at Scholes Bank by 1841. In 1841 Enos is living on Lee Lane in Horwich, which intersects Scholes Bank near the post office.   Enos and Elizabeth are found residing in Higher Booths by 1861, and two of Elizabeth's brothers are found residing in the household.

Enos died two years later in 1883.  This must have been an especially difficult time for his wife Elizabeth as her mother had been living with the 1881 and was reportedly "sick" at that time.  Elizabeth, however, remained living in Albert Terrace, Higher Booths with her children.  Her daughter Jane married Robert Henry CRABTREE in Haslingden in 1875.

Daughter Sarah Elizabeth was married to Solomon ASHWORTH in June of 1891.  Sarah and Solomon are found residing in Leicestershire in 1901.  The following year Sarah's twin brother, Enos Davenport Staveley, married Emily Haworth of Higher Booths, and by 1897 relocated the family to Chorley, Lancashire.  By 1901 Elizabeth had moved from Albert Terrace in Higher Booths, to Burnley Road in Rawtenstall:
