Dallas, TX

The following Staveley family appears to have spent almost as much time in  Dallas Texas in the early 1900's, as they did in England.  Census records and ship's manifests show this family originated from West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.  They appear to have arrived for the first time at Ellis Island, New York aboard the S.S. Campania in August 1903.  Thomas Staveley and his brother George sailed back and forth between Liverpool and Ellis Island New York between 1903 and 1924 numerous times.

In fact, it seems that either Thomas or George traversed the Atlantic each year during this time.  The Ellis Island records suggest this family came originally from Liverpool, and settled in Dallas, Texas.

1903: The S.S. Campania's 1903 manifest reads as follows:

1904: George arrived in New York from Liverpool on board the S.S. Oceanic August 17, 1904.

1905: Thomas again sailed from Liverpool to Ellis Island, arriving again aboard the S.S. Campania on August 19, 1905.  This time the manifest provides us with his wife's first name of Agnes.

1906: Thomas and his brother George sailed aboard the S.S. Caronia, arriving in New York July 31, 1906

1908: Arriving August 12, 1908 aboard the S.S. Caronia at Ellis Island with his wife Agnes and daughter Dorothy.

Thomas' brother George arrived on the S.S. Lucania just a few days later on August 15, 1908:

1909: On August 28, 1909  Thomas sailed on board Cunard's S.S. Lusitania, arriving at Ellis Island on September 2, 1909.  Here he gives the last name of his Father-in-law as "Rowland", presumably Agnes' father.  George has just recently married, confirmed by a GRO index entry for the June quarter of 1909, and is traveling with his new wife Clara.

1910: Thomas arrived along with his brother George aboard the S.S. Mauretania August 25, 1910.

1911: Thomas, traveling with his brother George, again sailed the Atlantic on board the S.S. Lusitania, arriving September 2, 1911.  The Lusitania was sunk four years later by a  torpedo off the Irish coast in 1915 where 1,198 people on board were lost.

1912: Thomas traveled again through Ellis Island on his way to Dallas, this time aboard the S.S. Mauretania with his brother George.

1913: Thomas embarked the S.S. Mauretania on August 30, 1913 arriving at Ellis Island on September 5th.  This would be Thomas' last trip to the US until after World War I.  George however, would make at least three additional trips during war time.

1914: Aboard the S.S. Mauretania George arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 15, 1914. 

1915: George appears to have been the only member of the family that engaged in trans-Atlantic travel during the first world war.  He arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Philadelphia from Liverpool on September 20, 1915.

1916: George made yet another trip during war time, alone, sailing from Falmouth aboard the S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam, arriving in New York July 06, 1916.

1919: On board the S.S. Orduna from Liverpool, Thomas here is found traveling with his brother Herbert.  Herbert is later found in the 1930 US census giving an immigration date of 1919, and this appears to be his first trip to the US.  Note that Thomas' last visit appears to have been in 1913, just before the outbreak of World War I.  This is likely his first trip across the Atlantic since the end of the war in 1918.

***There is a notation that Herbert expects to be in Dallas for a duration of 8 months on this visit.

Brother George arrived on S.S. Carmania from Liverpool on February 11, 1919 for a two month trip.

1920: This is Herbert's second trip to the United States aboard the S.S. Aquitania, that departed from Southampton on August 14, arriving in New York August 21, 1920.

1920: September 09, 1920 on board the S.S. Kaiserin Auguste Victoria from Liverpool, George arrives for another six month trip to Dallas.  

1921: Herbert traveled separately from his brother Thomas in 1921, aboard the S.S. Carmania, arriving in Port of New York, via Queenstown and Halifax,  August 08, 1921.  Herbert expects to remain in the US for 8 months.

***Thomas suggests here that his first trip to the United States was in 1892, almost 30 years prior to this trip!  He gives a duration for this visit of 3 months.

1922: Herbert returns the following year aboard the S.S. Scythia from Liverpool arriving August 26, 1922

Herbert's older brother George made a trip to Dallas a month later, arriving in New York September 08, 1922 on board the S.S. Carmania from Liverpool, with an expected stay of four months.

1923: Sailing aboard the S.S. Caronia, Herbert and his new wife Gladys arrive in New York on August 20, 1923.  Herbert gives the nearest relative as E. Latham (perhaps a member of Gladys' family?).  On the manifest is a handwritten notation under the section for duration of visit.  The notation reads "Permanent  see file 99284/298 & 99284/299".  Most likely a reference regarding their new "permanent" immigration status.

One month later brother George arrives on S.S. Aquitania on September 07, 1923 from Southampton, but this time his final destination is New York for four months.

1924: This is the last Ellis Island entry found for Herbert.  Sailing aboard the S.S. Berengaria from Southampton to New York, arriving August 08, 1924. They list their country of last "permanent residence" as "USA", with a duration of visit of 6 months.

Again Herbert's brother George followed him out to Dallas about one month later arriving from Liverpool on the S.S. Franconia September 08, 1924.  George expected his trip to Dallas to be for 6 months duration.  This is the last Ellis Island entry found for George.

Few census records have been found relating to this Staveley family, perhaps due to their continued excursions between England and the US they were simply missed from most census records.  In 1930 we do find Herbert and Gladys as follows:

1930: Lindell, Dallas, Texas

Also in 1930, we find an entry for a James A. Stavely. James is a cousin of George and Thomas Stavely above, being the son of their uncle, Henry Pawson Stavely. James appears to have settled in Dallas, but apparently never had children of his own. The census implies that both had been married previously.

1930: Dallas, Dallas, Texas

James Stavely died in 1959.
