Enos and Emily Staveley

Enos Davenport Staveley was born in Higher Booths in 1865, and was the son of Enos Staveley of Aysgarth and Elizabeth Davenport of Chorley.  Enos married Emily Haworth of Lumb, Higher Booths in 1892 at the Haslingden register office.  Emily was the daughter of Thomas Haworth and Emma Jane Gladwell of Lumb.

Enos and Emily's first two children, Annie (b. 1893) and Enos (b. 1895) were born in Crawshawbooth, but sadly Enos would not to survive his first year of life, and died soon after he was born.  By the next year, when Emily was expecting twins, the family moved to Wheelton near Chorley, Lancashire.  By 1900 when daughter Eunice was born, the family was residing in Withnell.

Son Thomas, twin to Enos, died very soon after the 1901 census was taken.

Son Enos (aged 4 above) served as a Private in the Manchester regiment in WW1, earning the British War Medal, the Victory medal, and the Silver War Badge.  It is unknown what the nature of Enos' injury/illness was that qualified him for the latter award. He later married Alice TETLEY, but unfortunately he died toward the end of 1945.

Daughter Eunice though only a baby at the time of the 1901 census, was eventually to spend much of her life institutionalized, and she died in 1967 after an extensive incarceration at Whittingham Lunatic Asylum near Preston, Lancashire.  It is not clear exactly what Eunice's disability was that lead to her hospitalization, and the family never spoke of her.  We do know that her mother Emily purchased a house in Stacksteads for Eunice, ever hopeful that some day she would 'get better' and come home.

Enos and Emily had one more child, Jack, born in 1909 in Brinscall.   Enos Davenport Staveley died in 1930 in Levenshulme, Manchester.  His wife Emily returned to Haslingden to be near her sons Jack and Enos after her husband's death, until she died in 1939.
